BBC2 adapts Thirteenth Tale

The BBC is lining up a new single drama from Harry Potter moviemaker Heyday Films, adapted from a best-selling novel by Diane Setterfield.

The Thirteenth Tale (1×90’), based on a script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons), will air on BBC2 later this year. James Kent (Inside Men, The White Queen) directs.

Described as a haunting psychological mystery set in the present day, The Thirteenth Tale tells the story of a young female biographer who sets out to interview a legendary writer whose health is fading. Through flashbacks starting in 1940, the author gradually reveals the dark secrets of her past.

Vanessa Redgrave and Olivia Colman are set to star.

David Heyman (Harry Potter, Page Eight) and Norma Heyman (Mrs Henderson Presents, Dangerous Liaisons) will coproduce. The exec producers are Polly Hill for the BBC and Rosie Alison for Heyday Films.

The Thirteenth Tale was commissioned by BBC2 controller Janice Hadlow and BBC drama commissioning chief Ben Stephenson. Shooting gets underway this month.
