BBC unwraps Christmas shows

The BBC has revealed a Christmas programming slate that will be topped with festive editions of Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing, plus a Top Gear special.

The Christmas edition of Doctor Who will see the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) get trapped on an Arctic base under attack from unknown creatures, with Santa Claus coming to the rescue. A two-part special of Top Gear will take viewers on a road trip through South America.

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special will bring back old contestants in a panto-themed one-off, while the pubcaster will also air movies including Avengers Assemble, Puss in Boots, Madagascar 3 and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen.

A new episode of James May’s Toy Stories, in which he attempts to rehabilitate the Action Man figure, is also on the slate, along with The Choir: New Military Wives.

Comedian Harry Hill is set to make his acting debut in family drama The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm, which tells the story of an absent-minded inventor who causes chaos with his hare-brained creations.

It will air alongside The Boy In The Dress, from fellow funny man David Walliams, which follows a 12-year-old boy whose chance glimpse of a model on a magazine cover introduces him to a whole new world.

The BBC also has Esio Trot, featuring Dustin Hoffman and Judie Dench, on its festive slate alongside On Angel Wings, an animated version of the nativity story based on the book by Michael Morpurgo.

Factual series The Snow Wolf Family and Me has also been ordered from the in-house Natural HIstory Unit, while Rik Mayall: Lord of Misrule looks back at the career of the late comic, with contributions from Michael Palin, Simon Pegg and Ruby Wax.

Elsewhere, a two-part Christmas special of Mrs Brown’s Boys and a festive edition of comedy series Citizen Khan have been lined up, while a one-off special will air focusing on the career of Julie Walters.
