BBC, Tencent in coproduction agreement

The BBC has signed a three-year coproduction and development deal with Chinese tech giant Tencent as part of a wider agreement with the Department for International Trade (DIT) in the UK.

The arrangement will see the UK pubcaster link up with Tencent-owned Penguin Pictures to focus on licensing, marketing and distributing “content-rich” documentaries. Tencent execs declined to give any details of upcoming projects or whether it was planning to import Chinese programming to the BBC’s channels.

Last year, the BBC and Tencent Video coproduced documentary Blue Planet II, which has since sold around the world.

As part of the wider strategic partnership agreed by the Chinese VoD firm and the DIT, Tencent will collaborate with leading British enterprises and corporations. The first phase will focus on film and television, high-end art and gaming.

The news was announced by Seng Yee Lau, senior executive VP of Tencent, and Liam Fox, UK secretary of state for international trade in London.

The tech firm also confirmed one of its key aims was to bring its online payment service WePay to the UK as part of the plans.
