BBC Studios names scripted chief

The BBC has appointed one of its executives to oversee drama and comedy output at its fledgling BBC Studios operation.

Nick Betts becomes genre director for scripted at BBC Studios and will work with creative leads, production management and business teams to ensure the delivery of “outstanding, quality content.”

He takes up the role immediately, along with a seat on the division’s board, and reports to BBC Studios director Mark Linsey.

Betts was most recently the BBC’s controller of business for drama, films and acquisitions and has previously worked for the pubcaster’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide. He was also a previous MD of NBC Universal Global Channels, UK and Northern Europe.

BBC Studios has been in turmoil this year with a number of senior staff leaving, including former scripted chief Mark Freeland, entertainment production chief Katie Taylor and factual and daytime chief Natalie Humphreys.

Their departures followed a revamp of BBC Studios under new boss Mark Linsey, who introduced a more commercial approach after taking over from Peter Salmon earlier this year after he moved to Endemol Shine Group.

billy_connoly“The BBC’s history of producing outstanding comedy and drama is second to none, and I’m looking forward to working with the brilliant creative and business teams in both genres to build on that success both for the BBC and other partners in the UK and abroad,” Betts said.

Linsey added: “I know that in Nick we have someone who will be instrumental in growing our scripted business for BBC Studios and the right person to give our editorial heads the creative space and support they will require to achieve success.”
