BBC gives Car Share final outing

Bafta-winning comedy Peter Kay’s Car Share

The BBC has commissioned two final episodes of Bafta-wining comedy series Peter Kay’s Car Share, including one which will be ad-libbed.

The show, which was extended into a second 4×30′ season last year, follows comedian Kay as he drives a colleague (Sian Gibson) to work as part of a carpool scheme.

It is written by Paul Coleman, Gibson and Kay, who also directs, with Gill Isles producing for UK prodco Goodnight Vienna. The ad-libbed episode and a show finale have been slated for next year.

The series, which won Best Scripted Comedy at the Bafta Television Awards, premiered exclusively on the BBC’s on-demand service iPlayer in 2015.

Kay said there are no plans to write a third season but admitted being “completely overwhelmed” by the response from viewers, with 100,000 fans signing a petition for the show to return.

“We were always very fond of ad-libbing around the script when we were filming the series so we decided to see what would happen if we took the script away and just relied on just our chemistry alone, reacting to whatever came on the radio,” he said.
