BBC flicks switch on Electric Ray

BBC1 in the UK has ordered an adventure-survival show for its Saturday night primetime slot from fledgling producer Electric Ray that sees contestants undertaking some of the world’s toughest challenges.

Prized Apart (w/t) follows 10 men and women who travel the world undertaking extreme stunts but face the prospect of being sent home if they fail to complete each challenge.

Once back in the studio, the contestant’s loved ones must answer a series of questions to stop them from being eliminated and allow them to rejoin the show.

The show is being produced by Electric Ray, the UK-based production firm launched earlier this year by Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and former BBC entertainment commissioner Karl Warner.

The series was commissioned by BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore and will be exec produced by Electric Ray’s joint MDs Karl Warner and Meredith Chambers. It will air on BBC1 in 2015.

Electric Ray was founded by Warner and SPT in January and focuses on developing original factual entertainment and entertainment programmes. Chambers joined as joint MD in April from Shed Media-owned Twenty Twenty, before Warner Bros Television Group (WBTVG) subsequently took full ownership of Shed in June.

The company’s development team is headed up by Thomas O’Brien, who helped create E4′s Party House and ITV2′s The Magaluf Weekender in his previous development roles at Room 414 and Two Four.

BBC1 has also ordered a drama based on a John Lanchester novel which has been adapted for TV by screenwriter Peter Bowker.

Capital (3×60′) explores life in the UK today and is based on a London street transformed by soaring property prices and inhabited by characters diverse in nationality, race, wealth and experience.

It’s being produced by UK prodco Kudos Film & Television, and is executive produced by Derek Wax for Kudos and Lucy Richer for the BBC.

The UK channel has also revealed a new science strand that will tackle everyday issues around health and diet. The Truth About… features different experts and presenters each week as they explore various subjects to do with human health.

The first show, The Truth About Calories (1×60′), explores how we measure what we eat while The Truth About Over-The-Counter Medicine (w/t, 1×60′) explores the products used to beat common ailments such as headaches and colds.
