BBC factual revamp revealed

Details of the BBC’s revamped factual team have emerged following the appointment of a head of specialist programming at the UK pubcaster.

martin_davidsonMartin Davidson becomes head of specialist factual and will oversee religion, history, science and business shows across the BBC’s channels.

Davidson, who was most recently head of commissioning for history and business, takes up the role after savings-targeted changes by factual commissioning chief Emma Swain.

Those saw four senior commissioning roles closed, including Davidson’s, while Aaqil Ahmed’s religion post has also been axed. The latter will remain with the broadcaster as head of in-house religion, while the futures of features and docs head Sam Bickley and current affairs head Clive Edwards, the two other decommissioned jobs, are not yet clear.

Two new roles were created in the wake of the reshuffle revealed in January, and Swain said in an email to staff that announcements about the vacancies would be made shortly. A head of documentaries, current affairs and BBC3; and a head of specialist features and natural history, are set to be appointed.
