BBC details ‘digital Olympics’

UK pubcaster the BBC has unveiled plans to make the London 2012 Olympics Games this summer the first “truly digital” event in the competition’s history.

The BBC plans to broadcast every event live, offering an “enhanced” video experience of 24 high-definition streamed channels available through the BBC Sport website, tablets and web-connected TVs. A mobile app will also allow users to access content on the go.

BSkyB, Virgin Media and Freesat cable and satellite customers will also be able to access the 2,500 hours of content (1,000 more than for the Beijing Games four years ago) via the BBC’s Red Button service.

There will also be an additional 24-hour channel of extra Olympics content for audiences with Freeview and BT Vision services, and a dedicated radio network.

The coverage will also allow users to rewind live events, add ‘chapter markers’ to locate key moments with ease and access live data and statistics.

BBC1, BBC3, BBC HD and BBC1 HD will all be dedicated to the 17-day event, which begins on July 27.

“The London 2012 Olympic Games is likely to be the biggest sporting event in the UK in our lifetimes and the BBC’s coverage will ensure that our audiences need never miss a moment,” said Roger Mosey, BBC director, London 2012.

“As the nation’s broadcaster we are committed to ensuring that viewers get the most from their Olympic experience and our comprehensive coverage will deliver on that promise.”
