BBC bolsters in-house drama team

The BBC has reshuffled its in-house drama department by bringing in an ITV Studios executive and appointing another head of drama in London.

Christopher Aird, currently the BBC’s head of drama in Scotland, will move to London and work with existing head of drama Hilary Salmon and Hilary Martin, who is head of drama in the north.

Salmon and Martin were appointed to their respective roles in July following the exit of Kate Harwood, who left as the BBC’s head of drama production in England to revive Euston Films.

Additionally, Elaine Collins joins from ITV Studios as creative director. Aird and Collins will work on a new slate of in-house BBC drama development, with the two newly created roles designed to bolster the pubcaster’s scripted slate.

Collins, who launched and produce detective show Vera for ITV1 in the UK, will continue to executive produce drama series Shetland for ITV Studios on a part-time basis.

Before his role for the BBC in Scotland, Aird was a development executive at BBC Independent Drama Commissioning, helping to launch Spooks for BBC1 and Bodies for BBC2. He’s also worked on The Inspector Lynley Mysteries and Hotel Babylon and was executive producer on all four seasons of Call The Midwife.

Gaynor Holmes (Monarch Of The Glen, Two Thousand Acres Of Sky, Waterloo Road) will become acting head of drama in Scotland until a permanent replacement is found.
