BBC America visits Dirk Gently

BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks’ US channel BBC America have greenlit an adaptation of Douglas Adams’ comic novels Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.

The show is set in the unusual world of the hyper detective Dirk Gently and is based on the books by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author.

The eight one-hour episodes, ordered straight to series, are being penned by Max Landis (Chronicle) and coproduced by AMC Studios, Ideate Media and IDW Entertainment, along with Circle of Confusion.

Sarah Barnett, president of BBC America, said the show would be “a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else. The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis’s brilliant and audacious take on this material we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBC America super-fans.”

Landis exec produces alongside Ted Adams and David Ozer for IDW, David Alpert and Rick Jacobs for Circle of Confusion and Zainir Aminullah and Arvind Ethan David for Ideate.

The drama joins fellow scripted efforts such as London Spy, Undercover and Thirteen on the BBC America slate.

AMC Networks paid US$200m for a 49.9% stake in BBC America, which also airs Doctor Who and Orphan Black, in October 2014. Former SundanceTV president and general manager Barnett arrived as president and general manager a month later.
