Banijay’s Cuarzo ups content chief to DG

Banijay-owned prodco Cuarzo Producciones in Spain has promoted its director of content to director general of the company.

Juan Ramón Gonzalo Carballal

Juan Ramón Gonzalo Carballal, who has been director of content since 2015, will now be responsible for Cuarzo’s entire output and lead the management team across all areas of its business.

Carballal replaces Xelo Montesinos, who had held the top role since 2015.

Before taking up his content director post, Carballal worked in directorial and production roles for multiple Spanish channels and producers.

Between 2006 and 2010 he was director of Cuatro’s breakfast news show Las Mananas de Cuatro; and was also director of Supernanny. He oversaw Cuarzo-produced entertainment series El Programa de Ana Rosa until 2014. He has also served as assistant director of news for national network La Sexta.

Carballal said: “As well as working with our broadcast clients, we have so much opportunity to create and produce programming with wide appeal through our collaboration with our Banijay Group creative partners.”

“This is a clear indication of our commitment to continue to grow our business in Spain,” said Marco Bassetti, CEO of Banijay Group. “Juan Ramón is extremely talented and his new remit will mean that Cuarzo can further develop and deliver programming across multiple genres to our clients in Spain.”

The appointment marks the latest in a series of changes at Banijay’s Spanish operations, which saw the merger of production outfits DLO Producciones and Magnolia TV to become DLO Magnolia at the end of October. The newly formed company is headed by DLO Producciones’ former CEO José Manuel Lorenzo.
