Atlantique to reboot Métal Hurlant

Borgia producer Atlantique Productions is making an updated version of French sci-fi comic series Métal Hurlant and has brought in Doctor Who writer Jamie Mathieson to pen the show.

Atlantique (Jo, Transporter) has entered into a coproduction agreement with fellow Parisian prodco WE Productions to reboot the latter’s Métal Hurlant Chronicles, the first two seasons of which aired on France 4 and on Syfy in the US in 2012 and 2014.

The new series, to be re-titled Métal Hurlant: Origins, is in development and is set to go into production in early 2015 for delivery in the third quarter. Each episode of the English-language copro is being developed as a 45-minute format.

Métal Hurlant: Origins will depart from the anthology format used in the first two seasons to become a serialised story with a seasonal arc and a recurring cast of characters.

Patrick Nebout and Olivier Bibas, executive producers at Atlantique Productions, said: “The partnership reflects our strategy to work as a European mini-studio, broadening our portfolio with new lines of products and forging alliances with the most creative independent producers around.”

Métal Hurlant is based on the French sci-fi comics anthology created in 1974 by Jean Giraud (better known as Mœbius), Philippe Druillet, Jean-Pierre Dionnet and Bernard Farkas.

The first two series were sold by Panini to Sony Pictures Television (SPT) for Germany, SPT Central Europe and SPT Russia, among other channels.
