Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is developing a period drama about crime in 1960s Britain for US cable network Starz.
The series, titled Crime, is LA-based movie maker Atlas Entertainment’s first TV project and is being developed with Monahan’s Henceforth Pictures for Starz and distributor Sonar Entertainment.
The project was developed from a feature film treatment by Vanessa Sadler and Monahan will exec produce alongside Atlas chief Charles Roven and William Green.
Starz and Sonar are financing development; the premium cable net gets all domestic pay-TV and home entertainment rights, including Canada, and Sonar has the option to distribute the show outside the US.
“There’s very little more interesting to me than the Sixties in Britain,” said Monahan, “taken from Profumo to psychedelia, from the London criminal world to the worlds of art and fashion – all of which continually intersected. I know one thing: it’s very, very, funny.”
Monahan’s writing credits include The Departed, The Gambler and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For; while Atlas is behind movies such as The Dark Knight Rises, Twelve Monkeys and the upcoming Man of Steel.
