Fremantle exec opens formats stable

MIPCOM: FremantleMedia Asia’s former CEO has resurfaced with a new distribution company and format.

Media-Stable is Patrick Schult’s first venture since stepping down as head of FremantleMedia Asia in March, 2011 after a 24-year stint at the global entertainment company.

At FremantleMedia’s Asia office, he was responsible for the management of more than 40 formats broadcast across the region each year.

Schult’s new venture will distribute Japanese formats and programming, as well as develop and distribute original content to the Asian market from its headquarters in Singapore.

The new company’s first partnership is with Japanese entertainment prodco Big Face, whose activities include web development, cross-media content and other areas such as apparel. Big Face’s programming slate spans primetime series, documentaries, sports and specials.

The alliance covers TV production; rights management; smart phone app development and distribution; web development; and event management. Big Face’s gameshow NumerOn, which airs on Fuji Television, is Media-Stable’s first distribution property.

Shingo Ishiyama, head of production and board director at Big Face, will also jointly serve on the Media-Stable board. Ishiyama previously worked with Schult as FremantleMedia Japan’s representative.

Schult said Big Face expanded the “conventional realm of media” into “vast arrays of media platforms.”

“Numer0n is a model case. While this show is being broadcast on Fuji Television, the brand is being developed as an international format with Asia as its beachhead, and it extends to a self-developed smart phone app,” he said.
