Turtles return with global presales

MIPCOM: Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has racked up presales worldwide for its refreshed version of animated classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Heading the list is the UK’s ITV, which has picked up seasons one and two for simulcast on ITV1 and kidscaster CiTV, with season one kicking off in spring 2013.

Other presales went to TVI in Portugal; RTL Klub in Hungary; Bandeirantes in Brazil; S&E Media Project and STB QTV in Ukraine; ABS-CBN in the Philippines; and Nicaragua’s Televisora Nicaraguaense.

This summer Spanish pubcaster TVE also signed a three-year deal for the series, starting in May 2013.
The updated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered on Nickelodeon in the US on September 29, followed by the UK net on October 1.

It is now rolling out across Nickelodeon channels internationally until December 2013. Nickelodeon has already ordered an additional 26 episodes for airing next year.

“These deals directly reflect the enormous buzz Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is generating in the international TV buying marketplace,” said Caroline Beaton, senior VP of international programme sales for VIMN, adding that the show has secured “more presale deals than ever before for a Nickelodeon series.”

The show, created in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, has also sparked renewed interest on the licencing and merchandising front. A new range of consumer products will launch in spring 2013, including ones from long-standing Turtles L&M partner Playmates Toys.
