MIPJUNIOR: Latin America’s Discovery Kids is looking to expand its audience reach and branch into content aimed at older children, its VP and channel director has revealed.
Speaking on a buyers panel at MipJunior today, Angela Recio Sondon said although the channel’s audience “sweet spot” is children aged four to six, she is currently looking for projects that “push the envelope a little bit as regards reaching eight-year-olds.”
Sondon, who was taking part in The Buyer’s Conversation session, added that since the preschool network only airs around 30% original commissions and coproductions, compared to 70% acquisitions, it’s important for producers to bring in ideas early.
“We do look for very specific things to push our brand so it always helps when we’re able to come in early and give that feedback about what we’re looking for to the producers – and specifically what we want to stay away from,” she said.
Discovery Kids Latin America airs four feeds across the region and broadcasts in Spanish and Portuguese for the Brazilian market. Its age demographic has traditionally been two- to six-year-olds, with four to six a particular focus.
Ahead of MipJunior, the network recently picked up Spanish preschool toon Zoobabu and also acquired UK animated series Mike the Knight.
