CARTOON FORUM: An animated short coproduced by Belgian animation house Beast Animation scooped the Cartoon d’Or award at the Cartoon Forum in Toulouse last night.
Directors Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels picked up the €10,000 (US$13,500) prize for Oh Willy, a 17-minute surreal short about a man who returns to the naturist community where he has spend his youth to visit his dying mother.
The film was coproduced by Beast, Polaris Film Production and Vivement Lundi both of France and Il Luster Films in the Netherlands and beat four other films to pan-European animation short award.
The other shortlisted titles were: Edmond Was a Donkey, a Papy3D Productions, Arte France and National Film Board of Canada co-production; Flamingo Pride, produced by Talking Animals and German film school HFF Konrad Wolf; Tram, a French-Czech co-production by Sacrebleu Productions and Negativ Film; and Zing, produced by the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
De Swaef and Roels said they are currently working on a new project based around Africa, but did not give any further details.
Beast is currently coproducing a preschool series called Dimitri (26x5’) with Vivement Lundi and Nadasy Film in Switzerland for France Television Jeunesse.
The stop-motion series and a planned TV special is about a bird who learns the importance of making friends and has adventures with different animals.It was pitched at Cartoon Forum last year and recently got a €40 000 investment from Belgian broadcaster VRT.
