The fire that tore through Berlin’s Reichstag in 1933 will be the backdrop for a one-off historical telemovie on German pubcaster Das Erste.
Nacht über Berlin – Der Reichstagsbrand (Night Over Berlin – The Reichstag Fire) will tell a tragic love story of two people set against a period of social and political unrest as the Nazi party rose to power.
The period drama will culminate with the arson attack that engulfed Berlin’s parliament building in February 1933. The film is scheduled to air on Das Erste in 2013 to mark the 80th anniversary of the fire.
The script was written by Dr Rainer Berg and Friedemann Fromm, who also directs. It is produced by FremantleMedia-owned UFA Filmproduktion and coproduced by ARD Degeto and regional broadcasters WDR, MDR and RBB.
Shooting begins on August 5 and is expected to be completed towards the end of September.
