CBS Studios International and multi-channel operator Chellomedia are extending their partnership by launching branded networks in 83 territories across EMEA.
The pair first partnered to create CBS-branded channels for UK pay-TV in 2009. This latest move will see the launch of CBS Drama, CBS Action and CBS Reality throughout EMEA. They will have a collective footprint of 43 million subscribers.
CBS Studios International is the global distribution arm of leading US broadcaster CBS. It will have a 30% stake in the channels and contribute library programming from its 70,000-hour catalogue, including 48 Hours, Judge Judy, Star Trek and America’s Next Top Model. The nets will also acquire programming from third parties.
Chellomedia-owned channel operator Chello Zone will form a new executive board comprising representatives from both companies.
“Chellomedia continues to be highly focused on building and growing the portfolio of TV channels internationally; it is very much part of our strategy to work with the best brands in entertainment,” said Chellomedia’s new CEO Niall Curran, who was promoted from chief operating officer last month. “We are committed to delivering growth, subscribers and performance for this partnership.”
The UK CBS-branded channels have been growing “impressively,” added Chello Zone CEO Dermot Shortt. Viewership has grown by 130% since launch, according to Barb data.
CBS Studios International president Armando Nuñez said the partnernship opened “yet another international distribution outlet for our vast programming library” and provided “another way to monetise our content.”
CBS also has channel JVs in India and Australia. Combined with the new EMEA territories, its networks are in 105 million households.
