Australian broadcaster Network Ten and the commercial arm of German pubcaster ZDF have come together for a live-action adventure series described as ‘Bear Grylls for boys.’
Sydney-based SLR Productions is attached to produce Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures (26x24′), while Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) are also investing.
The show, aimed at 8-12s, will launch on Ten and be sold internationally by ZDF Enterprises (ZDFE). Production is set to start in South Australia at SAFC’s new high-tech studio.
Based on the adventure books from children’s author Justin D’Ath, Sam Fox will take a comic look at the titular teenage ‘danger magnet’ as he braves oceans and jungles, coming across a range of ferocious predators and dramatic conditions along the way.
Executive producer and SLR CEO Suzanne Ryan described the series as “Bear Grylls meets extreme boy-scouting.” Ten’s head of children’s programming Cherrie Bottger added it was “high-end” live-action programming.
The Sam Fox character is not connected with the 1980s pop singer/glamour model of the same name.
