Fox 21 signs Syriana scribe for cable

The writer-director behind feature films including Syriana and Traffic has signed a production deal with US producer Fox 21.

Stephen Gaghan wrote the screenplay for Traffic, released in 2000, and wrote and directed George Clooney’s 2005 movie Syriana.

He has also previously written for television shows including NYPD Blue, American Gothic and The Practice.

As part of his two-year deal at Fox 21, Gaghan will develop series for cable and supervise other writers.

However, he will also continue his features work. His latest project, After Earth, for which he wrote the screenplay, is due out next year.

Fox 21, part of News Corp-owned Fox Entertainment Group, produces FX series Sons of Anarchy and A&E drama Breakout Kings. It was also behind Showtime’s Emmy award-winning Homeland.
