MTV eyes return to late-night

BANFF: MTV is eyeing a return to late-night with a pop culture talkshow fronted by comedians Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer.

A pilot for the would-be Nikki and Sara Show is awaiting a verdict from the top brass of the US channel, according to senior VP of series development for comedy and animation Brent Haynes.

“I’m extremely excited about the pilot,” Haynes told C21 at the Banff World Media Festival. “I’m hoping that next week or so we’re going to be in the late-night space.”

The show would air weekly, combining elements of an entertainment news magazine and Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, said Haynes. Each episode would include a guest and other comedy segments.

The pair came to MTV’s attention on the strength of their pop culture podcast You Had to Be There. Schaefer has also written for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

MTV has been absent from late-night for sometime. Jon Stewart hosted a short-lived, self-titled talker in the early ’90s before moving on to The Daily Show, which airs on corporate sibling Comedy Central.

Haynes also has New York comic Kate Riley working on a pilot, having paired the former Broadway dancer with showrunner Mike Gibbons (The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn).

Riley’s project looks more like a variety show, with comedy about what goes on behind the scenes, said Haynes.
