RTL Nitro fires up in Germany

European broadcast giant RTL Group is launching a new free-to-air channel in Germany dedicated to crime series, sitcoms and movies.

Male-skewing RTL Nitro will launch on April 1 with a line-up including free-TV premieres of US sitcom Modern Family, Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and Jerry Bruckheimer’s crime drama Chase (left).

Other highlights will include the US version of UK comedy The Office, event drama Rome, Kiefer Sutherland’s 24, and movies including King Kong and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Factual programming including Whale Wars will also feature in the schedule with classic shows such as Knight Rider and Charlie’s Angels.

Nitro will be complimented online with an video-on-demand service RTL Nitro Now, offering a seven day catch-up service.

An RTL spokesmans said Nitro would complete its portfolio of channels in Germany by adding a male-skewing network to the line-up, which also includes general interest Vox and kidsnet Super RTL. A channel manager has not yet been confirmed.

The launch comes amid major change at RTL, after group CEO Gerhard Zeiler quit earlier this month for a new role at Turner Broadcasting.
