Strictly spurs 3D TV sales

This weekend’s final of UK entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing (aka Dancing With The Stars), which will air for the first time in 3D, is spurring sales of 3D TV sets, according to UK retailers.

Consumer electronics chains Currys and PC World, both owned by Dixons Retail, forecast that sales of 3D sets will continue to grow this week ahead of the BBC1 show’s live final on Saturday. The companies haven’t disclosed how many units they have actually shifted but said that 40% of their TV sales are now for 3D-compatible models.

“Strictly is one of Britain’s best-loved shows and the final is set to be a momentous occasion – the perfect excuse to snap up a 3D TV set ahead of Christmas,” said Phil Samuels, category director at Dixons Retail, claiming that 3D TV sales are “really taking off.”

Earlier this year Dixons Retail reported a 500% increase in 3D TV sales – again without quantifying this. Currys and PC World revealed last year that one TV was sold every second over the Christmas period and expected similar or better sales this year.

The Strictly final, which is being aired live from Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom, will be available in 3D through the BBC HD channel and in selected cinemas around the UK.
