Toonz sets up in Montreal

Multinational cartoon house Toonz has opened a new studio in Canada, looking to capitalise on the ties between North America and Asia as it turns out both live-action and animated projects.

The Montreal shop – dubbed Toonz Entertainment Group Canada – stems from a partnership between Toonz (Wolverine and the X-Men) and locally based production, financing and post shop Mediabiz International.

Projects in the pipeline include season two of Speed Racer and the series HTDT, both budgeted at US$6.2m. The studio says it aims to invest in projects worth US$200m over the next three years.

“The decision to set up base in Canada stems from the growing cooperation between the North American production houses and Asian counterparts,” said Toonz Group CEO P Jayakumar. Montreal is home to a number of other animation and effects shops that also service the city’s busy video game sector.
