MTV’s Roedy retires, HD channels swell

Head of MTV Networks Bill Roedy has announced his retirement after 22 years at the company.

Roedy, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks International (MTVNI) and vice-chairman of MTV Networks, said he would leave at the end of 2010 to spend more time with his family. He will, however, continue to sit on the board of various organisations including the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American School in London.

The news comes as MTVNI announced plans to roll out its MTVHD and Nickelodeon HD channels into 30 countries over the next year. Nickelodeon HD will become a 24-hour channel in the UK on Sky from October 5, before expanding to markets including Poland, Russia, Israel and Brazil in the new year.

MTVHD will also expand its international distribution to become available in a further 30 countries by the end of 2010. This follows the channel’s recent launches in Bulgaria and Malta.
