Apple preps original drama plans

US technology giant Apple is aiming to take the fight to streaming rivals by creating its own scripted TV shows and movies exclusively for its Apple Music service.

Leading Apple execs have spoken to producers in LA about producing original drama content in a “significant new business,” according to The Wall Street Journal, with plans to offer programming to customers by the end of the year.

The streamer is already working in the unscripted space with Isn’t That Rich?, a series from singer will.i.am, ABC Studios and Propagate Content. The tech giant has also taken exclusive rights to James Corden’s format Carpool Karaoke.

Apple is hoping the move can boost its offerings on its music streaming service Apple Music so it can compete with rival Spoitfy. The news also comes as sales of Apple’s iPhones and iPads begin to slow.

WSG said Apple, which offers acquired content on a transactional basis, has not yet signed any deals for shows and plans are at an initial stage.

US SVoD services Netflix and Amazon Prime Video lead the original content race with a host of original TV series and movies for global audiences.

At Sunday’s Golden Globes awards ceremony, Netflix took home the coveted Best Drama Series award for its UK Original The Crown.
