Animal Planet rescues Canuck bears

Animal Planet in Canada is working on a local original series about an animal shelter for grizzly bear cubs with local prodco Omnifilm Entertainment.

Production has begun on Wild Bear Rescue (12×30′) in Smithers, British Columbia, with a family that runs the only animal shelter in the world legally allowed to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned grizzly bear cubs.

Omnifilm president and executive producer Michael Chechik and partner Gabriela Schonbach are executive producing the series with David Gullason, showrunner of History series Ice Pilots and Jade Fever for Discovery.

Brad Quenville, who has written and directed numerous projects for Omnifilm including CBC’s The Dolphin Dealer, is directing and writing the series.

The project will be pitched internationally in the coming months, while the series is due to air in 2017 on Discovery-owned Animal Planet in Canada.

Omnifilm’s roots are in nature documentaries and the Champions of the Wild producer made its first documentary, Greenpeace: Voyages to Save the Whales, in 1977.
