Amazon tackles rugby doc

As Good As It Gets?

Streamer Amazon Prime Video has picked up a sports documentary about leading UK rugby league team Leeds Rhinos from local media company The City Talking.

As Good As It Gets? focuses on the renaissance of the team under the ‘golden generation’ of players such as Kevin Sinfield, Danny McGuire and Jamie Peacock who led Leeds to an historic treble of trophies in 2015.

The film is narrated by Harry Potter actor and Rhinos fan Matthew Lewis and premieres at the end of April as part of the Leeds International Festival.

The documentary will be made available on Prime Video in countries including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in the week after the screening.

It can be accessed via the Prime Video Direct self-publishing programme, which helps content creators and storytellers make their video content available to Amazon Prime members and earn royalties based on hours streamed.

“One of our early objectives was to take this story to new, international audiences,” said Lee Hicken, director of the documentary. “We wanted to challenge the sports documentary genre and create something that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their knowledge of the team and the sport.”

Alex Green, European MD of channels and sport at Amazon Prime Video, said he believed the story of a team battling for three trophies would make for “compelling viewing” for all sports fans, not just rugby league followers.
