Amazon recruits Handmaid’s helmer

Reed Morano

Amazon Studios has signed an overall deal with producer and director Reed Morano, who won an Emmy for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale last year.

Morano will exclusively work with Amazon Studios to create original series that will be made available on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories following the deal.

She made history by being the first woman to win the Emmy and DGA Award for a dramatic series in the same year – both for her work on Hulu’s dystopian drama – and was the first woman to win an Emmy in the drama series category in 22 years.

“Reed is a creative powerhouse whose distinct point of view shines through her immersive, emotional storytelling and commanding cinematic style,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios.

“Jen Salke is known for elevating content and her unwavering support for the filmmaker’s vision. We share the same passionate enthusiasm for breaking the mold with provocative storytelling. I couldn’t be more excited about what we’ve been planning to create together,” added Morano.

Morano’s latest projects are the feature films I Think We’re Alone Now, starring Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning, and, Meadowland, starring Olivia Wilde and Luke Wilson.

She is currently directing The Rhythm Section, described as a global espionage thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law, produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson for Paramount Pictures.

Amazon Prime Video will this year premiere numerous original series, including the recently launched Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski; Homecoming, from creator Sam Esmail and starring Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale; plus the third season of The Man in the High Castle and the second season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
