Amazon picks up Girlfriend

The Girlfriend Experience is based on the film by Steven Soderbergh

Amazon Prime Video has secured the rights in the UK, Germany, Austria and Japan to Steven Soderbergh’s drama The Girlfriend Experience from Starz.

The 13-part series, which hails from US prodco Transactional Pictures, will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the three European territories this week and in Japan later this year.

The Girlfriend Experience stars Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough as a law student and intern at a prestigious firm who is drawn into the provocative world of transactional relationships. It is based on Soderbergh’s 2009 film of the same name.

Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seitmetz created the drama, which is executive produced by Soderbergh, Philip Fleishman, Lodge Kerrigan, Amy Seimetz, Gary Marcus and Jeff Cuban.

Amazon inked the deal with Starz Digital, the global digital and on-demand licensing arm of US cablenet Starz. In the US, Starz made all 13 episodes available on its digital service Starz On Demand.
