Amazon orders Italian heist drama

Nicole Morganti

The Antwerp Diamond Heist of 2003 has provided the inspiration for a new Italian scripted series unveiled today by global streamer Amazon Prime Video.

The company has greenlit Everybody Loves Diamonds from Fremantle-owned prodco Wildside in Rome, with CEO Mario Gianani (My Brilliant Friend) and head of international productions Lorenzo Gangarossa (The Young Pope) producing.

The show will be written by Stefano Bises (Gomorrah, ZeroZeroZero), Michele Astori (The Mafia Only Kills in Summer), Giulio Carrieri (The Man Without Gravity) and Bernardo Pellegrini (Thou Shalt Not Kill).

Everybody Loves Diamonds is a heist series with a comedic twist, following a team of small-time Italian thieves who manage to steal millions of dollars’ worth of precious stones from the Antwerp Diamond Centre.

Gianani and Gangarossa said the heist genre “has been popular and successful worldwide, but hasn’t been done before on Italian television.” The Amazon Original series will launch exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, the e-commerce giant said today.

The show will join other Italian originals on the Amazon Prime Video platform, such as documentary Ferro from Banijay and reality series Celebrity Hunted – Caccia all’Uomo from Endemol Shine Italy. Mafia drama Bang Bang Baby, produced by The Apartment and Wildside, is Amazon’s first scripted original commission from Italy.

“Everybody Loves Diamonds will thrill and surprise the Prime Video audience with its new take and comedic twist on a very famous heist story, and we are excited to be working with Wildside on this brilliantly fresh, brand new Italy-produced Amazon Original series,” said Nicole Morganti, head of Amazon Originals in Italy.

Morganti also announced the renewal of Celebrity Hunted for a second season. The show is adapted from UK format Hunted, which Shine TV has made for Channel 4 since 2015.
