Amazon latches on to The Tick

Amazon Studios has greenlit a second season of half-hour superhero series The Tick before the first season has become available to subscribers of its streaming service.

The Tick was created by Ben Edlund (Gotham) and produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. It is set in a world where superheroes are real and follows an accountant with mental health issues who suspects his city is controlled by a notorious villain.

The second 10-part season will begin production in 2018 and is expected to premiere in 2019 on Prime Video in more than 200 countries. The second half of S1 will become available on February 23.

The renewal comes as Amazon has cancelled a trio of comedy series – I Love Dick, One Mississippi and Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

In related news, Amazon has acquired the exclusive rights to Disney-owned US network Freeform’s The Bold Type (10×60′) in the UK, Germany, France and Spain.

The drama series is inspired by the life of Joanna Coles, former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, and will launch on Prime Video in those territories on February 9. The series is a Universal Television and The District production.

Earlier this week, Amazon Studios signed an exclusive two-year overall deal with Sharon Horgan, co-creator and star of UK comedy Catastrophe.
