Amazon greenlights Fitzgerald’s Tycoon

Amazon is moving ahead with its adaptation of The Great Gatsby author F Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel The Last Tycoon.

The project, which has actors Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer, Rosemarie DeWitt and Lily Collins attached, was part of Amazon’s most recent pilot season.

The period drama will be written and directed by Billy Ray and is a coproduction with Sony Pictures Television-owned TriStar Television, reports Deadline.

Set in Hollywood in the 1930s, the show will see Bomer play Monroe Stahl, a fictionalised version of US film producer Irving Thalberg, as he rises through the ranks at a movie studio and clashes with his imposing boss, played by Grammer.

The series was initially developed by Ray with HBO, but the US cablenet eventually passed on the project and it went on to resurface with Amazon.

A feature film based on the novel and starring Robert DeNiro and Tony Curtis was released in 1976.
