Amazon fires up HBO app

HBO’s streaming service has been added to Amazon’s set-top box Fire TV, giving subscribers access to more than 1,700 episodes of new and classic drama series from the US premium cablenet.

The HBO Go app joins similar streaming services from other US cable channels such as Showtime, as well as VoD players like Netflix and Hulu, on Amazon’s set-top box, which launched on April 2 this year.

HBO original films, miniseries, sports, documentaries and specials will be available to stream, alongside episodes of The Sopranos, The Wire and Game of Thrones.

The app is not yet available on Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, its competitor to Google’s Chromecast streaming device, but is due to arrive next spring, the US-based retail giant said.

“Since launch we’ve increased the number of services available on Amazon Fire TV by more than four times,” said Peter Larsen, VP of Amazon Devices.

It’s the latest deal between HBO and Amazon, after the pay TV broadcaster made its original programming available on the latter’s VoD service, Amazon Prime Instant Video, earlier this year.
