Amazon catches new Weiner project

Amazon has handed a straight-to-series order to a new drama from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and The Weinstein Company.

Weiner will create and executive produce the as-yet-untitled eight-part series, his first since hit show Mad Men ended its run on US cablenet AMC last year.

The show is described as a contemporary anthology series set in multiple locations around the world. News of the programme was first reported by Deadline.

Emmy-winning writer Weiner oversaw seven seasons of the 1960s ad agency drama Mad Men between 2007 and 2015. Alongside Breaking Bad, the series helped to establish AMC as a major player in premium drama.

He was also an executive producer of HBO’s The Sopranos, having previously worked on a number of sitcoms.

“In a time when there are so many options for entertainment, it’s been tremendous to see how Roy Price and Amazon have taken centre stage by distinguishing themselves through bold choices,” Weiner said.
