Amazon catches Moffat’s Last Post

Jessica Raine in The Last Post

Amazon has taken exclusive rights in the US to a forthcoming BBC period drama written by Peter Moffat (The Night Of) from BBC Worldwide (BBCWW).

The Last Post is based on screenwriter Moffat’s childhood memories and explores his father’s life as an officer in the Royal Military Police at the end of the British Empire.

All six episodes of the mid-1960s-set drama will be made available on Amazon Prime Video later this year.

It will star Jessica Raine‎ (Call the Midwife), Jessie Buckley (War & Peace), Jeremy Neumark Jones (Denial), Amanda Drew (Broadchurch), Ben Miles (Coupling) and Stephen Campbell Moore (History Boys).

“Young married couples in the heart of the 60s living in extremely close proximity in a very alien and dangerous environment has always struck me as ripe territory for drama,” said Moffat.

The deal was brokered by Philip Sequeira, VP of scripted sales and coproductions at BBCWW North America.

It follows previous deals between Amazon in the US and BBCWW North America for shows such as Doctor Who and Orphan Black.

“We’re thrilled to bring to our customers this authentic, heroic story of a group of officers and their families in a setting consumed by political and economic unrest,” said Brad Beale, VP of worldwide TV content acquisition at Amazon.

The series is made by Bonafide Films and The Forge Entertainment for BBC1. It is executive produced for Bonafide Films by Margery Bone and Elwen Rowlands and by George Faber and Mark Pybus for The Forge Entertainment.

Matthew Read will executive produce for BBC1. It is directed by Jonny Campbell (The Casual Vacancy) and Miranda Bowen (Women In Love).
