Amazon boards first French original

Germanized stars Roxanne Duran and Christoph Maria Herbst

Amazon Prime Video has boarded forthcoming dramedy Germanized, its first original for its French streaming service.

Amazon Prime Video is the exclusive distributor in France and Belgium for the 10×30’ series, which it will air under the title Deutsch-Les-Landes. The show was also commissioned as a first original for German telco giant Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV platform EntertainTV last year.

Germanized, which stars Roxane Duran, Sylvie Testud and Christoph Maria Herbst, is coproduced by Deutsche Telekom, Munich-based Bavaria Fiction and Newen Group-owned Telfrance in France. It will be exclusively available to EntertainTV customers on its SVoD service EntertainTV Serien. Germanized will launch on Amazon and EntertainTV at the end of 2018.

The series was devised and written by creative teams from France and Germany, including co-creators and head writers Franck Magnier and Alexandre Charlot (Les Guignols), co-creator and writer Thomas Rogel (Heute Show) and Stromberg producer Peter Güde. It is exec produced by Sandra Ouaiss for Telfrance and Moritz Polter and Oliver Vogel for Bavaria Fiction.

Jay Marine, VP of Amazon Video EU, said he was proud to announced the first French Prime original, a little over a year since Prime Video launched in France and Belgium.

“This is just the beginning for us, as we will keep on bringing the best of French and international TV, including new French Originals, to our customers here,” he added.

European and international expansion has become a key strategy for Amazon, and it recently signed a two-year, first-look deal with comedian Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s UK-based prodco Merman.

It commissioned its first original German language series You Are Wanted in 2016, and also coproduced Paris-set fashion drama The Collection with BBC Worldwide, France Télévisions, Federation Entertainment and Lookout Point.

Amazon also collaborated with German prodco UFA Fiction to coproduce the second and third seasons of Cold War drama Deutschland 83.

The latest commission comes amid a period of overhaul at the company, with Jennifer Salke joining from NBC Entertainment as Amazon Studios’ new head this month.
