Amazon bags HBO shows for Japan

Game of Thrones will be among the HBO dramas to join Amazon Prime Video

Shows from US premium cablenet HBO, including Game of Thrones, will be made available on Amazon’s Prime Video service in Japan.

Fifty series, which will also include True Detective, Westworld, Big Little Lies, The Wire, The Sopranos and Sex & the City, will be offered to Japanese viewers in the months following April 1 as part of the deal.

Time Warner-backed HBO previously had an agreement in Japan with Hulu, which was acquired by domestic broadcaster Nippon TV in 2014. The US cablenet also previously made some of its content available in the country via a transactional VoD deal with Amazon.
