A+E Networks in the US has cancelled long-running A&E series Dog the Bounty Hunter but renewed Ice Road Truckers and begun casting for History’s first scripted series.

Almost 250 episodes of Dog the Bounty Hunter aired over eight seasons, focusing on the Chapman family, who hunt down fugitives who have jumped bail.

In a statement, the show’s stars Duane ‘Dog’ and Beth Chapman said they had been unable to reach an agreement with A&E over a ninth season. The programme was produced by Hybrid Films and the remaining episodes will air on Saturdays at 21.00 from June 2.

Last year, Canada-based Cuppa Coffee Studios announced it was working on an animated version of the programme.

A&E Networks has, however, renewed another long-running franchise on one of its other channels.

Ice Road Truckers, produced by Original Productions and executive produced by Thom Beers, Philip D Segal and Matt Ginsburg, will return on Sunday June 3 at 21.00.

History is moving ahead with Vikings, its first scripted series, which will premiere next year.

The network has announced that Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment, Usual Suspects) has been added to the cast. The Irish-Canadian coproduction is being produced by World 2000 and Take 5 Productions and distributed internationally outside Ireland, Canada and the US by MGM.
