Speakers Biographies Mark Boyd Director of content BBH ![]() Mark joined BBH as Director of Content in June 2003. Since then, BBH Content has been recognised as setting the agenda in branded content. Projects include branded TV channels, branded programming, equity partnerships in theatrical film releases, press, contract publishing, mobile and gaming. Mark has worked on a range of brands including AXE, Audi, Bertolli, Electrolux, HSBC, Sainsbury's and Orange. Prior to BBH Mark worked at Hutchison 3g heading up young adult marketing and at Drum PHD on a number of advertiser funded projects on different media. Mark is also and founder and the Chairman of the Branded Content Marketing Association (BCMA), bringing together people interested in branded content from film, music, TV, mobile and gaming industries. The BCMA runs in US, Australia, UK and Germany. Eric Braun Managing Director and Chief Executive International Television News Associated Press ![]() Eric joined AP from Raycom Media, which owns and operates 39 television stations in the United States. At Raycom, he was responsible for its news and Internet operations. Prior to Raycom, Eric was Senior Vice President of the global television consultants, Frank N. Magid Associates. Jamie Cason Interactive Executive BBC Interactive Drama & Entertainment ![]() Jamie joined the BBC in 2000 as Editor of the drama and comedy categories of bbc.co.uk. He was promoted to Interactive Executive in 2002 with responsibility for developing services on interactive TV and mobile platforms in addition to the internet. Jamie’s achievements include developing, writing and executive producing the iBAFTA-nominated Spooks website as well as being executive producer of iBAFTA award-winning Celebdaq. In 2004 he created Taggerz, an online animated series about graffiti artists for 1Xtra. Prior to joining the BBC, five years ago, Jamie worked for a variety of theatre companies and productions as a marketing and press agent, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the London International Festival of Theatre and numerous West End shows. He wrote for Wired UK as a freelance journalist and has performed as a stand-up comedian. Jamie holds a degree in Modern History from Oxford University. His passions are jazz, Ipswich Town Football Club, his wife and children. Not necessarily in that order. Peter Cowley Director of Interactive Media Endemol UK PLC ![]() Strategically, Endemol looks to exploit its TV brands on a multi-platform basis and fund its activities via broadcasters; advertisers or consumers. Increasingly Endemol is looking to develop entertainment products on digital platforms such as mobile, broadband and interactive TV. Peter is also CEO of Victoria Real, a well-known digital production company, wholly owned by Endemol UK. Victoria Real produces the majority of Endemol UK's interactive services and also focuses on the digital marketing sector and the development of gaming/gambling applications. In 2004, Peter won the 'New Media Age' (a UK trade magazine) award for 'The Greatest Individual Contribution to New Media' at the magazine's 2004 effectiveness awards. Previous to Endemol, Peter has worked in the media, marketing and advertising industries at Freeserve / Wanadoo, Cable & Wireless, Videotron and Bartle Bogle Hegarty. Paula Le Dieu Director Creative Commons International ![]() Prior to joining Creative Commons, Paula worked for the BBC in the role of Project Director for the Creative Archive. This is a public service initiative to provide the fuel for digital creativity by opening up access to, and allowing for re-use of Britain's cultural heritage starting with the BBC's radio and television archive. Paula remains involved with the BBC Creative Archive project as a special advisor and spokesperson. Angel Gambino Vice President, Commercial, Strategy & Digital Media MTV Networks UK ![]() Angel is responsible for managing all non-advertising revenue streams including new ventures, affiliate relationships and mobile and other partnerships as well as collaborating with the Viacom Brand Solutions group on below-the-line commercial alliances. Prior to MTV Networks UK Angel was at the BBC where she held the position of Controller, Business Development & Emerging Platforms. She was responsible for extending the BBC’s four television and nine radio channels to mobile, broadband and on-demand. She drove multi-platform strategy for mobile and broadband as well as commissioning, licensing and launching of the BBC’s first mobile, broadband and on-demand products and services. Before the BBC, Angel was responsible for online multiplayer gaming and games on-demand for Gameplay, as Director of Broadband having previously consulted to a number of Fortune 500 companies as they expanded into other markets and in the area of online transactions. For much of Angel’s earlier career she served as a Director of Legal and Business Affairs for NGOS. Simon Gunning Director of Interactive Media Celador International ![]() Before joining Celador Simon worked from 2000 at Flextech Television as Controller of Interactive Programming playing a key role in establishing and implementing new interactive business strategies across five of the UK’s biggest digital broadcast channels. This included the development of interactive sponsorship and advertising solutions, and the creation of synchronised and standalone interactive gaming, voting, competition and telephony operations to complement the channels’ programming. He was also responsible for establishing commercial and content partnerships across multiple platforms. Previously Simon worked as Head of Business Development, Interactive Media at Flextech. In this role he focussed on developing commercial interests across both new and traditional media, exploring global rights acquisition and exploitation across all digital media platforms. In 1997 Simon created his own company, SGM, to handle business management and career development for multi-platinum recording artists and producers. His achievements in music management include five UK number 1 LPs, two Grammy nominations and one MTV Europe Award. In 1999, having built a successful business around key production clients, he began offering new media consultancy services to the music and television industries, including digital rights management and digital sales. In 1994 he joined SOS Management Ltd a recording artist and record producing management company, working with high profile clients including multi-million record sellers James, Black Grape, Hanson and Garbage. Simon graduated with a degree in political history from The School of Slavonic and East European Studies at London University. He began his career in 1992 as a promoter for the Reading Festival.. Alex Holt Head of the Energis Media Sector Cable & Wireless ![]() In 2003 Alex was appointed Head of Media Marketing, with a remit to create a sector and go-to-market strategy that differentiated Energis in Media. In 2004 he was asked to Head up the Energis Media Sector and played a key role in winning the deal to provide the BBC with all its telecoms requirements for the next 10 years. Prior to his time at Energis, Alex worked in the marketing team at Pace Micro Technology looking at the impact of digital television and also spent 2 years in marketing consultancy specialising in technology companies. Iolo Jones Chief Executive Officer Narrowstep ![]() Prior to Narrowstep Iolo established Interactive1 in 1997, a company specializing in Internet product development and integration, alongside a subsidiary pioneering webcast company, Web Channels. Interactive1 developed pioneering systems for clients including Shell, Nomura, Cisco, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Canon, Channel 4, Prudential and the US Dept of Energy. In 1988, he joined Paragon Communications as Account Manager before leaving a year later to join Ogilvy & Mather as Senior Executive handling Corporate & Financial clients. In 1990, Iolo formed his own company, Sutton Jones Multimedia which he grew over a seven year period to become a leading force in digital media. In 1997 Sutton Jones Multimedia was sold to Tempus plc (now part of WPP, the world’s largest advertising and marketing group). After graduating with degrees in Radio, Film & Television and Educational Broadcasting from the University of Kent at Canterbury, Iolo worked in film special effects for London Weekend Television (LWT) as a technician. Justin Judd Director i-Rights ![]() Until July 2004 Justin was Controller of Interactive Media for Granada plc and was responsible for the development, production and exploitation of cross platform and interactive content across Granada’s entire programme portfolio, including high-rating and award-winning programmes such as Coronation Street and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. Previously Justin worked as a producer of comedy, drama and entertainment programmes both at Granada and for other major producers and broadcasters in the UK and US. He won an International Emmy Award in 1994. Tom Loosemore Head of New Media Foresight BBC New Media ![]() Prior to joining the BBC, Tom was Director of Applications at chello broadband, based in Amsterdam. Previously, he has been editor of Capital Radio's websites, and was responsible for developing the multiple award-winning local information website UpMyStreet.com. From 1995 until 1997 he was a journalist on Wired Magazine, and has written extensively for the national press on internet-related issues. Neil MacDonald Group Managing Director YooMedia Plc ![]() Prior to joining DITG, MacDonald was CEO of Sportal (1999 to 2001) and led the business through its launch and expansion across Europe. Before Sportal Neil was General Manager of Internet services at BT working with clients such as Tesco and Yahoo. Adam Singer Group Chief Executive MCPS-PRS Alliance ![]() Adam has launched or managed over a dozen satellite television channels, and as Chairman and CEO, helped take Flextech PLC from a value of £60 million to its eventual sale price of £2.4 billion. Adam created and launched 24-hour coverage of Parliament in the UK (subsequently taken over by the BBC) and launched and managed the Discovery Channel in the UK and Europe. He was one of the architects of UKTV (the Flextech joint venture with the BBC) and chaired it and has dealt extensively with international broadcasters in France, Scandinavia, Argentina, Japan and the US. He was formerly the COO of John Malone’s TCI International, and CEO of Telewest Plc and has been a non-executive director of the Scottish Media Group. Among other activities he currently sits on the Ofcom content board. He regularly contributes to UK press, radio, and television on digital issues. Stephen Nuttall Business Development Director BSkyB ![]() Prior to joining Sky in 2001, he worked for Sportal, an online sports company, and Telepiu (now Sky Italia). Adrian Swift Director of Television enteraction tv ![]() He began his media career as a newspaper journalist before becoming one of Australia’s top executive producers for major lifestyle and sporting programmes. While at Channel Nine, Adrian was the founding producer of Australia’s number one travel programme "Getaway". Under his stewardship, the programme won many awards and was sold to 14 countries, gaining an international audience of over 100 million. As well as producing several international outside broadcasts, including the Australian Grand Prix, Adrian launched Australia’s first commercial television website – a site which ultimately became NineMSN Expedia in Australia. After working on the Nine Network-Microsoft joint venture in Australia, Adrian moved to London to work for leading British factual producer Endemol as Executive Producer on programmes for Channel 4 and Channel 5. Before joining enteraction, Adrian was Head of Digital Interactive Development for Mirror Television, where he was responsible for developing advanced interactive formats and broadband solutions for new digital channels and platforms. Jonathan Sykes Managing Director, Content Strategy Video Networks Ltd ![]() As Managing Director, Content Strategy, Jonathan oversees and develops existing relationships with content providers. He also forges new partnerships with key suppliers, be they traditional linear TV channels, commercial partners, production companies or digital content providers. Prior to joining Video Networks, Jonathan was CEO of NTL subsidiary PTV, which controls NTL’s television and internet content businesses and he also spent nine years at BSkyB in various roles including legal counsel, Assistant to the General Manager of BSkyB and General Manager of Sky Sports. Sykes also sat on the board of a number of joint ventures during his time at BSkyB including Manchester United TV (MUTV). Jonathan qualified as a barrister at law and completed a senior management programme at Harvard Business School. CLAIRE TAVERNIER Senior Vice President UK and Germany and Senior Vice President, Interactive FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide ![]() Recent licensing successes in the UK include the highly successful Pop Idol attraction at Madame Tussauds in London as well as the reinvigoration of cult kids’ brands Rainbow and DangerMouse. In Germany, FremantleMedia has put together a major music, merchandising and promotional programme behind the stars of its major soaps Gute Zeiten Schlechte Zeiten, Verbotene Liebe and Unter Uns. In addition, as Senior Vice President, Interactive, FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide, Tavernier supervises FremantleMedia’s global activities on all new platforms including online, interactive TV and mobile. Since joining FremantleMedia in November 2001, Tavernier has been involved in a number of high profile new media projects, most notably the interactive activities surrounding various versions of the Idols programmes around the world. These have included highly successful websites in the UK, US, France, Germany and a number of other countries, ground breaking mobile products including the first ever SMS vote on American television for smash hit American Idol 2, and successful interactive TV applications in France and the UK. In addition, Tavernier oversees an extensive interactive exploitation programme which includes online, mobile and iTV versions of FremantleMedia’s most famous shows, including Baywatch, Price is Right, Family Fortunes, DangerMouse, The Bill and The Benny Hill Show Before joining FremantleMedia, Tavernier worked in various positions within the Pearson Group, including Head of New Media for Pearson Education Europe. She was previously a strategy consultant at Monitor Company. Andy Taylor Managing Director Channel 4 New Media Andy has been Managing Director of New Media at Channel 4 since June 2003. He is responsible for generating significant commercial revenues for the channel as well as extending its reputation for innovation and creativity into the new media space helping to enhance Channel 4's public service contribution. Andy joined Channel 4 from Victoria Real where he was Manging Director for 2 years having initially joined the company as Head of Legal and Commercial Affairs Previously Andy worked at Reuters as Legal Counsel and Dibb Luton Alsop as Assistant Solicitor. Bruce Vandenberg Managing Director Interactive Rights Management Limited ![]() Prior to founding IRM, Bruce held the position of Director of Interactive Media at Celador International Limited, from January 2001 until September 2004. At Celador, he was responsible for conception and execution of the interactive strategies for Celador’s program brands, including Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Specifically, Bruce was responsible for the global rollout of revenue generating interactive brand extensions to Celador’s formats across seven different platforms (Internet, Wireless (SMS, WAP, JAVA), Interactive TV, Fixed Line Telephony, Interactive DVD, PDA’s and In-flight Entertainment). He has launched interactive services in more than 45 countries through partnering with major broadcasters, fixed line and mobile network operators and technology service providers on every continent. The gross consumer spend on these interactive services has been estimated to be in excess of $60m, generating substantial revenues for Celador. Prior to joining Celador, Bruce worked for Talkcast Corporation plc, a dotcom start-up (1999 to 2000); News International’s Internet Service Provider, the CurrentBun; and Siemens, where he was responsible for the global roll-out of the BT/Concert VPDN project (1998-1999). Robert W. Whitmore President NPOWR Digital Media ![]() Robert has more than 25 years of management experience within the entertainment industry. In 1999, he and inventor Dwight Marcus founded NTECH Properties, Inc., the parent company to NPOWR Digital Media. Prior to that, he formed and became co-owner of New York-based Manhattan Beach Recording Studios and World Coast Music. From 1989 to 1992, Robert was President of Cine-Source, Inc., a company involved in feature film development and production. For Cine-Source, he arranged the financing for and served as Supervising Producer of Texasville, the sequel to The Last Picture Show. From 1985 to 1988, he was a development producer for Warner Bros. Television, and just prior to joining, Warner Bros., Robert was Executive Producer of the feature film Runaway Train, that received three Academy Award nominations and captured three Golden Globe Awards. In the early '80s, he was Chairman of the pioneering electronic music synthesis manufacturer and software developer/manufacturer, Voyetra Electronics Inc.
