ABC recruits Quantico for VR

ABC in the US has launched its first scripted virtual reality (VR) experience, allowing viewers to assume the role of an FBI recruit in cop show Quantico.

The VR content became available yesterday to coincide with the drama’s midseason premiere and has been scripted by show writers and produced by ABC Studios.

The experience enables fans to join two FBI trainees as they track down and apprehend their assigned target. The experience is available online (QuanticoVR.com) and includes instructions for accessing the content on desktop and via Littlstar’s app for headsets, mobile and Apple TV.

“Working in virtual reality opens up so many possibilities and ways to engage fans beyond what can be accomplished on a flat screen,” said Jeffrey Weinstock, VP and creative director at ABC Integrated Marketing.

“We’re literally inviting fans to be a character in the show, immersing them in this world and allowing them to explore and discover parts of the story on their own.”

The experience also includes two so-called ‘Easter eggs’ that can be found while watching the VR content, which then provide bonus footage and insight into one of the character’s motives and connections to terrorist activities. The show has been produced in association with car manufacturer Lexus.

The freshman drama, from ABC Studios, was extended for a second season last week.

Earlier this year NBCUniversal International Networks commissioned a VR police procedural series for its Syfy channel.
