ABC ready to unleash Hulk

The Hulk is close to returning to television after US network ABC confirmed a new series about the Marvel Comics character is in development for 2013/14.

The property last appeared on television as The Incredible Hulk, broadcast on CBS from 1978 to 1982, famously portrayed in a dual role by actors Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. It later returned to NBC in a series of TV movies.

The Hulk has also appeared in three big-screen features, most recently Marvel’s The Avengers (aka Avengers Assemble), which paired him up with other Marvel characters including Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. Disney took over the franchise when it bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009.

Following ABC’s Upfront presentation to advertisers in New York yesterday, where the network unveiled 10 new series, ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee told reporters a show based on the Hulk had been considered this year but didn’t made the cut.

However, he said it is now slated for 2013/14, with Guillermo del Toro still working on the project, which was first mooted last year.

Lee added that Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee is keen to bring other characters to television but a recent pilot based on The Punisher didn’t move forward.
